One of the biggest reasons I'm not buying the iPhone 5 right now is no support for iPod video out to use the MotionX GPS Drive app with my car stereo.

I can confirm that the connector works with both of my Bose Sound Docks and also my in car iPod connector in my Audi flawlessly. I will say though that the small connector will have a problem with cases where the bottom of the phone is covered. If you have that type of case you will want to get the larger of the two adapters.

"If you’ve got a SendStation Dock Extender sitting around..." is properly worded because if you don't have it sitting around you can't buy it. The linked website states it is no longer available. Amazon doesn't have it either.

My new Lightning to 30-pin adapter works fine with my new Chrysler 300's stereo's USB data port and properly displays the iPhone 5's menu structure on the car's main display screen. That port used to also charge my old iPhone 4, but doesn't my new iPhone 5.

I just received my Lightning to 30 pin adapter (non-cable version) and noticed that it will not work if you have a protective case on your phone. This is a huge pain. It would be great to have made the pin a little longer to account for protective cases (even slim protective cases). Now I am stuck having to take off the case every time I use it.

Yep:

the entire top edge of adapter’s body sits flush against the bottom of your iPhone or iPod. So unless you’ve got a case that leaves the bottom of your iPhone or iPod unobstructed, chances are you won’t be able to use the standard adapter. The cable version of the adapter uses a much smaller housing around the connector, so it should be usable with many more iPhone and iPod cases.

Sadly, you're correct. (That's why I worded it that way.) It's still one of my favorite iPod/iPhone accessories.

Why is the cable's connector housing larger than the plug housing on Apple’s stock Lighting-to-USB cable, I wonder? I was so excited to finally get mine the other day and immediately disappointed to find I could not use it with my iPhone 5 case.

I currently have an iPhone 4 to use with the Logitech s715i speaker dock I am considering purchasing. I was also looking into getting the Logitech bluetooth boombox instead. If I was to purchase an iPhone 5 or iPod Touch 5G with the 30-pin to lightning adapter (the 7.5 inch version), does that adapter work to charge and play the iPhone 5 with the Logitech s715i speaker system?

I could also just get the bossdock+ adapter instead of the Apple adapter, which would be better in your opinion.

I don't mind Apple changing up the connector...what irks me to no end is that they didn't include the adapter for free when selling a 900 dollar phone. They did the same with the Retina MBP and the Magsafe...making me pay another 10 dollars after spending 3000. Ridiculous.

The S715i uses USB power, I believe, so the adapter will work fine.

The switchover to Lightning is only one of a series of recent anti-consumer moves Apple has made (I could cite others, for inst., if it had wanted to, Apple jolly well could have put out an iCloud-friendly version of Snow Leopard for the benefit of folks who have Macs that can't be upgraded to Lion). Even assuming that all goes well using this adapter with with yourpresent gear, that $30 price tag is a tax you have to pay to Apple to keep on using your own stuff. And there are reports that Lightning has some kind of security feature designed to prevent third-party mfrs. from putting out their own less expensive versions. If true, from where I sit that looks suspiciously like a monopolistic business practice.

And how about all those belt-clip holder/charger devices or the solar chargers and supplemental battery chargers that double as iphone protective covers? I guess they get tossed in the trash.
