"...more then iMovie..." ?? Editor!!

I cringe reading the then/than inversion on web forums, but in an edited article I just shake my head. Ugh. We're in the age of grammar/spell checkers.

What's describd in the article, is exactly what is claimed for the XT. Until performance comparisons are published there is no way of knowing if the Fusion Drive is "better" or just a new name on existing tech. well, we can guess: the Momentus XT has 4GB of flash on its little SSD. The Fusion Drive has 128GB on its SSD. That's quite a jump, and means the drive can permanently leave A LOT on the SSD. The Momentus could barely (or not) store the OS and a few favorite apps. ~peter in oakland

Good point. The 750 MB model of the XT actually has 8 GB cache, and is a 7200 rpm drive. Though I too am impressed by the 128 GB SSD portion of the Fusion, it's not a "given" that it would blow the XT away. Seagate can also ship a 128 GB model if it makes sense. Then there's the cost/performance issue. The 750 GB XT costs $190 at retail, the Fusion ??? as a stand alone option.

I wonder what happens to optimizations and data placement after a drive mirror restore from an external device.

I wonder this. I could see a fresh install maybe working, but a restore? Perhaps it's smart enough where it'll evaluate, not right away but with some use, where you need your data. Perhaps Apple's own software is tagged so if there is a restore it's automatically put to flash, everything else hdd?

With the redesign of the iMac and the slim design of the mini, they're using 2.5" drives, right? If so, why can't this technology be added to MacBooks? Or can it and we just haven't gotten to a revision cycle yet? Perhaps a silent update on the webstore?

Based on what i saw in the keynote photo's etc. Apples implementation of fusion is way different that a hybrid drive. Where as a hybrid drive has the platter based hard drive and SSD in the same enclosure, Apple's has just a standard platter based hard drive and then what appears to be a mac book air like SSD installed in a different spot.

On October 5 I bought the 750GB Momentus XT with 8GB for $127 at Amazon. Have yet to install it but online testing reports dramatic speedup for accessing the most commonly used files, viz. startup.

I have an MBA-11 128GM Of course I meant GB, not GM. I don't think they can add it to the AIR. This is actually a spinning hard drive + software if I am not mistaken.

Actually, Cincy said the drives described were connected using wifi...

Reading the specs it looks like the 21" iMac could have a 2.5" drive and the 27" will have a 3.5" drive. I wonder what the HD speed differences will be?

What was the point of posting all of this. No one knows the inner workings of Fusion as of right now. Chillax we'll get there.
