I can open "Notes" and "Contacts" but can't write or delete. The instant I try, the spinning beachball begins. Seems that this is an issue only on my newer MacBook Pro and not on my older iMac, both of which are now running Mountain Lion which I regret, nor on my iPad2. It also seems that the issue is limited to the apps which are syncing in iCloud. Have tried deleting files from Library as others have suggested, to no avail. Since I really depend on both these apps, it would be nice to get them working again. Anybody out there have the same experience and know what to do?

So I have an update to the problem below. I reinstalled Mountain Lion 10.8 (it's interesting that you can do that at all since I was already running 10.8.1 or 2). Now both Contacts and Notes are working again. So I'm hesitant about upgrading to 10.8.2, though since I can always go back a version maybe it's worth trying.

You could do what I do when I upgrade (and in general).

I clone my hard drive. In particular, before I upgrade to a new version of the OS (but also when I install updates), I clone the drive just before the upgrade. Then if I have problems, I just boot from the clone drive and clone it "back" to the internal drive.

I did this when I upgraded to ML. I then found that ML had issues with using Time Machine with my NAS device and I could not print using ML at work, so I booted up the clone I made just before the upgrade and "reverted" to Lion. Since there is now a ML print driver for the printer at work and a new firmware update for the NAS (I have not installed it yet), I will likely try upgrading to ML again...and I will use the same process...i.e. clone the internal drive before upgrading.

I will note that cloning also gives you a backup in case your hard drive craps out on you.

Because I had upgraded Mountain Lion already, I could no longer open iPhoto unless I upgraded again. So I did and Notes and Contacts are now still working on both my machines. However, I'm again noticing how slow they both have become. It's as though they have to warm up by doing something like launching an application or a finder window or whatever first. That takes a very long time and afterwards things go back to a mostly normal speed. But each time I go away for a while and I guess the computer goes to sleep, the slow functioning returns.

I've written about this on the Apple support forum, as have others, but so far I haven't found the real reason. On my iMac, I had something left over which used most of the cpu as revealed by Activity Monitor, but it's gone now and the slowness remains.

Anybody else having this issue? Since it's on both my machines and only started when I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I'm assuming there is a connection.
