Having an iPhone 1st gen iPad and iPhone 4 and a nexus7 i found the iPad mini and nexus7 to be both useful but the nexus to be less expensive.

That was a great review. Thanks for the enjoyably thorough writeup.

"...the full-size iPad’s 2048-by-1536 resolution—consider that such a resolution at the iPad mini’s smaller size would have given it the highest pixel density of any Apple product."

actually it would be the same pixel density as the iphone retina display. 326 ppi. the mini's current pixel density is the same as the original iphone, so double that for retina display ppi.

Thorough and thoughtful reviews like this are why I read Macworld. Articles on Apple from general news sites just don't compare to yours.

Yes, but you didn't address whether I can get by with 16G or 32G or have to go all the way to 64G?

Right. That's what I meant, but I worded it poorly. We've updated the article to clarify.

Well, that question isn't specific to the iPad mini ;-) It depends on what you'll use it for and how many apps, and how much media, you plan to keep on it.

In general, if you plan to use a lot of apps, store a good number of photos, and sync more than a few playlists and movies, I think 16GB is too small. 32GB is a nice sweet spot for most people. 64GB is for the crazy people like me.

Excellent review. Picked up a mini on Friday and it lasted about an hour till my wife picked it up. 30 minutes later it was customized with her email and Facebook accounts and another trip to bestbuy was in order,
While there it returned my new Kindle Paperwhite, which while incredibly light and convenient, just would have ended up in a drawer if I'd kept it any longer. The mini has been in a couple of multi hour reading sessions already with hardly any hand fatigue. The Smart Cover is a bit sharp on the edges and I remove it when reading for extended periods.
On Saturday, we went to disneyworld with our daughter. My wife brought her mini tethered to her phone. She listened to music, checked web pages, used the Disney app for wait times and event schedules, even took pictures of our daughter with the princesses. After a full day and night she still had 20% charge left.
I think the display is very good, don't have a retina iPad so I can't compare them. What I can tell pu is that we'd be much less likely to take a full sized iPad with us as often as the mini will head out with us. I'd become a big fan of the galaxy note over the last few months but am thinking of dumping it now that I have a mini. I'm pretty sure I want to return this one for a 4 G model though.

Great review. I agreed with pretty much everything you said. I tried out the mini in the Apple Store and was very impressed with the thinness and lightness and great design. I think it's perfect for my Kindle-loving parents since they're interested in getting a tablet. Personally, though, I'll stick with a full-size iPad: I love the huge screen and the gorgeous retina display. Plus, my iPhone is my portable device, so portability isn't a priority for my iPad. My money is going towards a new 4th-gen iPad instead. Can't wait to get that blazing fast A6X chip.

While playing with an iPad mini at the apple store, I overheard someone say, "This is what a tablet should be!" I almost laughed out loud at the awesomeness of the moment. Personally, my first reaction to the tablet left me with two thoughts. First, that the iPad mini is the standard iPad and the iPad is the larger, secondary version, not the other way around (as you stated in the review). Second, I felt that Steve Jobs must have been using a clunky, twice as slow and twice as fat 7inch iPad prototype when he made his decision about 7 inch tablets. I don't presume to know the man, but I think that if he had held the iPad mini, he would have been a fan. Well done, Sir Ive!

I liked this article. Nice tone. Lots of details and specifics. Good honest review....but (sniff) I have a Mac-mini (after starting out with a tower G5) and, honestly, there ain't nothing 'mini' about it, except it's size. Thinking of getting another one, in fact...but since I have the iPod Touch 3G and that's my 'computer in my pocket' I think I'll go for the full sized iPod 4thG ...because of the SPEED...that's always been my first priority. Also good Retina display will be nice for video and pics...and it was a good point in this article how it's IOS lifespan for app may be longer. Amen.
