It bypasses the phone company when sending to other iOS and OSX with Messages enabled, but you get cut off from those who only have SMS (Android, Windows phone...)

If you have completely disabled SMS/MMS with your carrier, your carrier won't be sending for or transmitting to you any texts, so you obviously can't be charged. Anything you send or receive using the Messages app will be free, but of course you'll only be able to send to other Messages users of iOS and Mac devices.

I figured it out.
You need to enable your second receive address (in my case, my iphone number) .
Close preferences and look at your iPhone. There will be an alert saying your phone number was added to messages. Click ok.
Open preferences and you'll see the Send From selection at the bottom.

That's correct. You don't need to choose which account to send messages from if only one account is available.

The answer seemed to be to unregister my phone number with Messages when roaming.
Is there another solution?
