I recently bought the related Phaser 6500/N printer on an enormous discount from NewEgg, and was surprised and disappointed to discover that Xerox does not have Mountain Lion-compatible drivers for it (though they are supposedly planned, according to this doc: http://download.supp...10-8_Matrix.pdf ).

Does Xerox generally have good OSX support, or are buyers taking their chances when it comes to future compatibility?

I don't own this model printer, but I do own two other Xerox printers. These are genuine PostScript printers. As such, advertised Mac support is usually not an issue because they use the built-in PostScript driver with the [optional] manufacturer-supplied PPD file. That said, Xerox Mac support has traditionally been fantastic. My printers support AppleTalk and Bonjour, and come with an OS X management utility. Like the Phaser 6700/N, they have do not have a Mountain Lions-specific driver. However, this is not an issue because the older driver works perfectly well.

As a rule of thumb, PostScript printers are future-proof and past-proof. If you operating system has a PostScript driver and supports some form of IP printing, then you are set. OS X meets these criteria in spades.
