WD have had the same issue here in Australia and it's only a matter of time before Apple s looked at here.
Especially in light of the ACCC's success against Apple in regard to the misleading advertising over the 4G in the iPad.
AppleCare has always been expensive and should be unnecessary anywhere there is decent consumer protection laws.

Excellent that in Europe manufacturers have to provide 2yr warranty on electronics. Still leaves the issue of getting it actually fixed, turnaround time, shipping cost to repair facility and whether they'll send you a refurbished replacement instead of repairing your actual unit.

Maybe they could force a minimum standard for product support as well. 90 days is nothing and is deliberate by Apple to push more AppleCare out the door.

My experience with AppleCare here in the United States as well as in other countries has been excellent. Apple may find it uneconomical to provide the level of service they offer with AppleCare and just drop it entirely in the E.U. and just go with the 2 years mandated. In that case you will get your E.U. mandated warranty. Time will tell which is the better deal.
