You can count me as grumbling. I still don't think that Apple has made the case for the superiority of the Lightning connector. Remember several years ago the many devices Apple promised would interface with their old 30-pin connector, such as sphygmomanometers and glucometers? Never happened. Now that we have the amazing Lightning, what wonders of connected data are available? Speaker docks. Yeah, that's exactly what this new connectors brings us: the same devices we had before, only more expensive. I bought an Apple Lightning to micro USB adapter last week so I'm now free to use the many charging cables I had already. Call me when Lightning gives us something that the non-Apple world doesn't already have. I don't know where you've been but there are indeed blood pressure cuffs and glucose meters available that interface with the dock connector of iOS devices.

Why would Apple prevent Bluetooth from working? Why would it cripple the device it makes the majority of its profits on ......

Good question, but they do. Tried connecting to an external Bluetooth GPS receiver lately, or passing something to an Android phone over Bluetooth? Right, you can't. The Apple version of Bluetooth is crippled, however justifiable that might be according to Apple.

This is what I meant to address in the above comment. Sorry about that. Yes, Apple has made these devices so there you go.

That's more a function of the software using Bluetooth than the Bluetooth itself. Again, what is the benefit to Apple of preventing use of Bluetooth. There are some security issues (which accounts for the lack of support for file sharing) and usability issues (which is why Apple has a special way of interfacing with external GPS units), but it is not in Apple's financial interest to lock-down Bluetooth unnecessarily.

And exactly what is the problem with having more devices capable of using the Lightning connector? It's certainly not like Apple has tried to eliminate third-party products to connect to their i-devices over the years.

Sorry. If you ask me, the headline of this article is nothing but link-bait that could have been much more positive by lauding the new products rather than making it sound like they were competing with Apple.

So what's the problem with this generation cables and over 1-meter length? Is no one planning to make 2+ meter cables or not? I cannot believe in the 21st Century a tech company would design an essential accessory with such limited bandwidth that cable length mustn't exceed 3' lest data loss occur! C'mon, designers, give us longer cables!
