Apple screwed up with Messages beta. It should not have been installable on Macs that aren't upgradeable to Mountain Lion. Now they have customers who have been using Messages for months who won't be able to continue to use it after December.

What am I supposed to do? I have an old mac Pro that won't do Mt. Lyon!

Just stick with iChat and Snow Leopard - you'll be better off for it!
