I have 10.1.5 (beta) and I notice that in the Energy Saver preference panel, their is an option to reduce the processor speed, as in 9! I haven't tried it for a long time, but I supposed this could increase battery life somewhat.

Also, there is visual feedback when you press the Eject button. (A transluscent window, like the sound/brightness one, comes up with an eject symbol in it).

If your computer is optimized for QE, it should be faster than OS 9. The entire OS, that is. Scrolling, etc.

I forgot to mention about computer w/o QE.

If QE is not enabled, speed will be about 90% of OS 9, supposedly.

And to that 90%, add all the time saved from not having to reboot after a crash. I'm faster in X now than I ever was in 9 because I'm able to force quit non-responsive apps without bringing down the system.

I swear a whole lot less now, too.

Bring on the big kitty!

The 10.1.5 beta I have seems to boot up faster. Maybe it's just me, though.

10.2 will be faster without QE for everyone. 10.1 is faster then 9 in some cases and not in others. so you saying 90% is crud. it means nothing.
what people want is overall faster then 9.
QE is also only for video stuff like well maybe window resize and or scrolling. but not app launching or copying files etc. that has nothing to do with quartz.
so zachs, saying 90% means nothing. what you mean or shjould be saying is this.
For what Quartz affects or does or is for, mac os 10.2 i think will be 90% what OS9 is in those same ares or with QE as fast as 9 or faster. you should say that cus just 90% people thinks means the entire OS performance wqhen Quartz only affects part of the OS, not app launch time or copyi9ng files etc. it's only for graphics.

one thing apple can and should do to speed up x is cocoa finder and totally re wrtitten which part of this is in 10.2 and allow us to turn off all animation, shadowing and special effects like with windows xp allows you to turn it all off.

Cocoa isn't any faster than Carbon - other than in terms of development time. They are just two different ways of calling the same system routines. Rewritten Finder, that will help. But it might well be Carbon.

Ok let me start off by saying I've been a lurked here for a while and finally decided to join,I just installed Os X.2 and it rocks..

Ichat works with AIM users, itools users and also as a network based im tool, it has an icon in the top of the finder next to the clock which flashes when you get an im. You can also turn off bubbles but there not as bad as everyone thinks

As for system prefs, there is a new pane called digital hub which includes burn, disks, music, photo and video so if you plug it in OS X.2 knows just what to do.

The beachball is gone as stated before.

It is overall faster from bootup as well as shutdown and it seems alot more stable.

Even the internet is running quicker and pageloads seem to be cut in half with almost no redraw trouble at all.

Ans spring loaded folders is worth its weight in gold!

Hope this answered some of your questions, and yes its 2 discs I only installed the first and am working on getting the second, if there are anymore features in the second disc not mentioned I'll keep you posted.

Seb, apple is going to re write the finder into cocoa. this is better cus with carbon you don't get updated windows when dragging. look at IE. it's carbon so when you move the window or use the menues while a page is loading the page stops and updates only after you let go of the mouse. omni web keeps going. it is cocoa.

i never said cocoa is faster i only said apple is going to re write the entire finder into cocoa. and the new finder will be WAY faster. i can't wait. but it will be 10.5 most likely before they re write the finder totally. so each major update will be a little more re written finder, but not all untill at the least 10.3 which is a long shot at best.
