Thanks for the tip! Now I can leave it turned on and just use Control-click (right click) to open.

I keep hoping Apple will license the likeness of Rick Moranis for use in the Gatekeeper dialogue box.

Close, but Louis was the Keymaster; it was Dana (Sigourney Weaver) who was the Gatekeeper.

Agreed, though, that I would much rather have an image of Rick Moranis in that dialog however (e.g. http://www.filmjunk....kmoranisgb3.jpg ;-)

Not that I dislike Rick Moranis, but Sigourney Weaver would be MUCH nicer to look at.

I disabled GateKeeper altogether. The OS still asks you if you want to open an application when you have never opened it before on that particular computer. Common sense does the rest. And there's always backups ;-0
Risky, maybe, but I just really dislike my computer meddling with my affairs. If I double-click something, it's because I want to open it.

*Facepalm*

So it is!

Well, guess I'll have to petition Apple to rename Keychain Access to Keymaster.

Obviously the control-click is the way to handle single applications, but if you ever set the Gatekeeper preference to off for just one or two applications, you can turn it back on. Gatekeeper only applies to the first launch of an application, subsequent launches are not affected.

This makes zero sense, the OS is interferring with both dialogs. GateKeeper only asks once as well. Once you've successfully launched it never asks again. If you turn GateKeeper back on and the apps you've already launched will still launch.

FYI: Gatekeeper is also implemented in Lion. The same tricks apply.

As to whether it's worth using, it represents an incremental improvement in security. Because you can adjust it to suit your preferemces, it's not bulletproof. It does, however, highlight the advantages of Apple's software distribution model. Nor is it something that can easily be reproduced on Windows or Linux, so it adds some luster to the Apple ecosystem. At a time when Apple is doing a number of things that rub me the wrong way, I can only applaud their efforts to take Mac security more seriously. And, for now at least, Gatekeeper is relatively user friendly.
