"It will be a long war of attrition, but Apple has no durable long-term advantages-what Warren Buffett calls “moats”-to keep most of its customers loyal."

Patents are durable long-term advantages. I hear Apple has some. (sigh)

In recent weeks, I’ve written that Microsoft ($ MSFT) will ultimately muscle-out Apple ($ AAPL) as the leader in smartphones and tablets.

The Surface appears to be the answer Microsoft gave to the tablet question over a decade ago. How is this going to be different now exactly?

By continuing the Basic/Pro distinction, Microsoft proves it still hasn't learned the lesson of OS X, which has only one version. How come we lesser folk can't have Remote Desktop Connection and Domain Join in our operating system too, huh, Redmond?

"Apple launched the first offensive in the smartphone and tablet wars, but in a long-term war of attrition it is doomed to lose for the same reasons that it lost the original PC war."

This guy keeps mentioning a "long-term war of attrition" -- what exactly is this guy going-on about. This is real ass-scratching stuff.

"And Apple’s insistence on controlling every aspect of both its software and hardware puts it at a disadvantage to a more flexible Microsoft."

Which is why Microsoft products have been vulnerable to every load of malware for nearly two decades.

These things read like a sports page. On both sides.

Apples recipe for success: Great Products + Total Control (Lock Out/In)

Tradeoffs are always made regardless of platform. Apple devices don't house an OS and initial software, thus consuming storage, etc.? "More flexible" means that the user can decide which compromises get made and availability of configurations and upgrades.

Different strokes for different folks. Or the right tool for the job.

Agreed. I don't know why RT exists.

Mr. Sizemore also wrote an article on Oct. 8, 2012 entitled: “Brain Damage Might Improve Your Investment Results.”

Do you see a trend here?

"Microsoft, dragging the legacy of Windows desktop applications on its back like the bloated carcass of a morbidly obese monkey, is supposedly 'more flexible.' "

I love this stuff! Thanks again for my morning laugh!

And yet, if Apple ever ships an full blown OSX tablet, with ports and a memory slot, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

The end is near!!

Opps, maybe not.

Barclays buys 8,500 iPads; sends 'enterprise ready' Bat-Signal

One of the world's largest banks is rolling out 8,500 iPads to its front-end bank branch staff. But what lies underneath is a signal to other corporate and enterprise clients that Apple's shiny rectangles are far from consumer-only devices.

"it’s amazing how future products from Microsoft beat existing Apple products time and time again." that is my all-time Macalope line, and never more true than now. And the last bit about a Win9 feature that would allow unsold PCs to auto-surf the Internet had me laughing out loud. Thanks for another great article.

Exactly right. Apple has the right solution for me; for many Mictosoft is a better fit (and I work in a Microdoft world). Harleys and Hondas both roll down the same roads, buy their riders have differing needs and requirements.
