Thanks for your article. I've been an avid podcast listener for many years, and have shifted between different apps as the technologies change. I am among those who tried Apple's Podcast app and found it isn't fully featured enough to meet my needs. I've been using Pocket Casts on my iPhone for several months now and really LOVE it. In addition to supporting OPML import of my existing feeds, it also has good share options to share episodes, podcasts, and even specific locations in a podcast via Twitter, Facebook, email, etc. I love this app for podcast consumption:

(And no, I'm not affiliated with them in any way!)

I wrote a review and "how to" for Pocket Casts in October:

I'm not sure what I did, but when I ask Siri to play a certain podcast, it does it through the Music app. I have both Apple's Podcasts app and Downcast on my phone.

I think that Music.app is aware of all audio media on the phone.

Nope. That's wrong. I'll keep tinkering...

I too like to have all my content available in a Playlist via iTunes. So I do not have Apples Pocast App on my iPhone or iPad an longer (it's awful and clumsy anyway). One thing about keeping everything in iTunes is I enjoy being able to have both audio and video podcasts in the same playlist on my iPhone. iPad never had this option. Also,I too use the DownCast App if I need to download podcasts directly to the iPhone. Apple having their own Podcast App is OK for the novice. However, they shouldn't have eliminated the ability for the iTunes app to "get more episodes".

I too have been an avid podcast listener for several years. But my usage has dropped off with the new podcast app. It seems that the latest episodes are never available and always need to be downloaded at the time of listening. Which means you are dead in the water if on a plane. So I have a 4 hour flight to stare at the list of podcasts that I COULD be listening to.

Why doesn't Apple just add a playlist capability to the Podcasts app? It always seemed like a glaring omission to me. I like using a playlist during my commute, mainly because once I hit Play, I don't have to touch my iPhone again during the whole commute. As it is now, I either have to pull to the side of the road to start the next one or divert my attention while driving.

iOS 6 handling of PodCasts is uncharacteristically ham-handed for Apple and very disappointing. In the previous incarnation, if you downloaded a podcast from a provider and you could check for more episodes/programs and download directly from your Music app in a single gesture. Now you have to jump through several hoops and navigate a very confusing menu directory. I'm not sure what Apple is thinking with this one, but the experience is more what I would expect from the Android market or even a 3rd party content supplier. It's very disappointing.

Right on! I listen to audio books that I download as podcasts. If I have to listen via the podcast app, I have to restart every time I get to a new part. Instead I put them on a playlist in itunes on my mac and sync them with my iphone, and I never have to restart. Adding this functionality in the podcast app would make a lot of sense. How do we get the word to Apple?.

I download audiobooks from iTunes. The result is they play perfectly in iTunes.

Since ios4, or thereabouts, video podcasts (The Rachel Maddow Show, for example) play in the video app.

Yes, but you have to do it through iTunes.

1) Select the podcast episodes you want to add to a playlist.
2) Select "Make MP3 copy".
3) When the copy(ies) are made, find them in your main music list and drag them to the playlist.
4) Order them in whichever way you want.
5) Sync with you device and you should see your playlist appear, complete with podcast eipsodes.

I use this method when downloading multiple recordings (which have been recorded at the same time) from DAR.fm in order to seperate out the different recordings into the correct station and play order.

I like the podcast app much better for playing podcasts than the music app. A big improvement.

30 skip is big and is 10 second backward skip. And the pain of getting a new episode is eliminated. IT was atrocious in the music app.

I am confused. Is this an IOS 6 issue? I am still using IOS 5.x on my iPhone 4 and I have both the Podcasts app and the Music App installed and both seem to be working fine. I do not like the Podcast app and it does not work well with my automobile audio system, but the Music app works fine for music, podcasts, and iTunes U and it is recognized and functions properly with my auto audio system.
