Two points:
1) you may need to re-start the Music app
2) the Music app needs a wifi connection to iTunes to create a Genius playlist - won't do it from just what's on the phone.
Playing podcasts in iOS 6's Music app

"So, in a nutshell, remove the Podcasts and iTunes U apps from your device and sync that content only through your Mac's copy of iTunes. Do that and you’ll find Podcasts and iTunes U entries when you tap the More button in the Music app."
After I once use iTunes on my Mac and sync to my iPhone (all latest versions), the Podcasts app on my iPhone has my podcasts all right there. I click on the podcast title and I can turn on subscribing and other options. Now I don't have to reconnect to my Mac to get new episodes. Try experimenting, folks before you criticize. Yes, iOS devices are not as intuitive as using Macs, but for the most part, they're fine.
I just wish it was easy to add podcasts to the app on my iPhone, that is, podcasts not found in the iTunes Store!

I think commenters have raised valid points that you're ignoring in your response.
1. The article is in response to a reader who wants all audio in the same app.
2. After experimenting and trying, the podcast app doesn't do playlists.
3. After playing a podcast, you have to manually start the next one, which isn't good if you're driving.

I'm tempted to revert to playing podcasts through Music.app purely because I rely on the 'Last Played' metadata to have iTunes govern which podcasts are left on my device and which are deleted from it. Playing podcasts through Podcasts.app does not record this metadata, so my elegant method has completely broken.
Also, I find that podcasts that I download in the app and then sync back to my computer are recorded with a release date of 1st January 2001, which is also obviously not good (although this was the same with podcasts downloaded through iTunes.app, so it's not a new annoyance).
