I hate it too! I like to open my playlists in separate windows when I'm burning CDs for my vehicle. I feel like we're going down the old PC road - since when does Apple keep you from opening items on your desktop? It's so frustrating - I can't stand the columns .. Apple's always been about drag and drop functionality ... I'd like to go back to the old version if I can figure out how to do so without losing my music. Already frustrated over the loss of Rosetta support, so that I won't ever upgrade to Lion because I use the original iMovie HD in my movie transfer business, and I love Appleworks, and I still miss that danged burn button at the bottom of the old iTunes!
The ups and downs of iTunes 11

I'm staying away from iTunes 11. The biggest reason is the inability to open playlists in separate windows. That's a critical function for me, particularly for my work as a radio host. I imagine I could live with the other changes I don't like, but why should I have to?
If Apple does not restore the ability to open multiple playlist windows, I'll start shopping for an alternative to iTunes, even if it leads me away from Apple altogether. It's ironic that iTunes is what got me interested in Apple in the first place.
I don't know a single iTunes user who prefers iTunes 11 over previous versions.
