Hope this is the right place to post this.
I've been working to get my ipad to connect to an Apple TV and then the Apple TV to display what I'm doing on my ipad with a smart board. I have the ipad 3 and the mini and the Apple TV is the latest generation. Also an iphone 5.
The initial problem was with the smart board not having HDMI, but I think I finally got the screen display to work (hdmi to VGA adapter and then a longer vga cable to connect). But no sound. The Apple TV has "Optical digital audio" out. Fine, but what do I need to connect it to the smart board because all that has is a normal 3.5 adapter for audio input and, I think, it also has a USB connector for sound when it everything is connected by wires to a PC.
If I can get sound to work, I'll be able to walk around with an ipad (or phone) and teach at the same time so this is a very big deal for me. Gotta be something out there - hopefully reasonably priced - that will get me audio in this situation!

I was reading through the reviews of that item and some said it wouldn't carry audio from an Apple TV. So, eventually, I found a friend who had an audio converter he thought would work. I tried it and and it did so I ordered one myself:

This, combined with the cable that converts the HDMI to VGA gives me a working system like I wanted. VERY nice to be able to do everything I want via an iphone or ipad from anyplace in the room!
