This is very helpful and very clear... but missing the last (and most confounding) part of the process.
Namely:
How does this AAC version work with iTunes and RSS feeds for non-Mac listeners?

Example:
I have a podcast which I've been producing since 2006 (CraftLit.com). Many if not most of my listeners are NOT Apple-product users. I host my show at Libsyn.com (craftlit.libsyn.com/podcast). The Libsyn publishing process pings iTunes and creates its own shownotes page with a player.

My understanding was that I had to post mp3 files to play nice with iTunes.

My further understanding is that, unlike the files used at YouTube, there is no way to embed an AAC player into a webpage. Or, at least, I've not been able to find code to let me embed an AAC file into a webpage.
Thus, when I tried to do an enhanced podcast of Chaucer's Prologue (pictures, links, chapter markers) I had no way to disseminate the podcast to my regular listeners.

So:
How do AAC files work with iTunes?
Can they be embedded like a YouTube/Quicktime video (m4v file)?

Thank you so much for your help with this. I know I'm not the only podcaster frustrated by this final step and the general lack of information about how to get this kind of content out to listeners.
