I assume Google Maps works as described on an iPhone 5. Do you lose any features when using it on a 4 or 4S?

Does the app allow pre-4S iPhones to use turn-by-turn navigation?

Performance on my iPhone 4 (iOS 6) is sluggish when scrolling, zooming and rotating maps, especially in comparison to Apple's implementation.

I think the app is horrible. Slow, choppy (using iPhone 5), bad routing, and the biggest issue is either it's not possible, or i can't figure out, how to get directions using a starting location other than my current location. So lame!

Also, it says buses in Seattle are free, and it doesn't show the different routes on a map, it just shows them in words. Horrible.

Bad app!
1) Same crap low contrast map that Apple Maps has means that you can barely see the streets on the screen when outdoors.
2) Crap navigation. This is a typical experience ... get to street view, OK, cool, now how do I get out? Try pinch, try zoom, try swipe, try double tap, try triple tap. They need a 'get me outta here' icon or something!

In general, bad navigation if you want to move between features (e.g. street view, driving directions, general map w/o driving directions).

Not that great. First, I decided to find a train home. Apple Maps uses local transit maps, which quickly found the fastest route. Google Maps sent me over 10 blocks away to a much further subway station, which then required a transfer of trains. Second and third choices were worse.

Second, I looked for the way to drive home to Queens from lower Manhattan. Google Maps sent me to the north end of Manhattan over the (former) Triborough Bridge then back down to Queens. Apple Maps sent me right into Brooklyn and up over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Funny, my colleague's Samsung with Google Maps showed the same route as my Apple Maps. My Google maps didn't on my iPhone.

I also found his Samsung sent me to the wrong subway station and the wrong train. My iPhone was spot-on, and it was faster, even including the handoff to the routing app.

At least neither one sent me into the river.

Boo Boo Boo.......

The first run and yes google got the address wrong. Where as Apple Maps had no issue at all. And there are Way too many steps to start a rout. I do like the voice but ill have to wait to see if there is a night mode, a feature I hope for in Maps.

You Tech heads can blast Apple all you
want the maps app is not as bad as you claim it to be and for a first try it is fantastic. Remember Google has been at this for decades. The next version of Apple Macs will be phenomenal better than all I guarantee

Apple's interface and controls are superior. Furthermore, there is no new learning curve.
But Google's info is dramatically more complete -- for example: traffic data; mall, university campus and public park internal roads and paths; building and other POI data.

We now have a choice. I have just today moved up to iOS 6 and am very pleased that my next phone can be another iPhone

I downloaded it to play with but it won't necessarily replace Apple's iOS 6 mapping application. Yet reading the press (not Macworld), you would think that every download of Google Maps means that the iPhone owner will never use Apple's map app ever again. What a bizarre interpretation of events.
