Thanks for the article and tips. I hadn't found the sort by year option, and I really missed that from iTunes 10. One thing that drives me crazy is if you are in the new Albums view while listening to music, it doesn't move to the current song at each song change. Any idea why or how to correct for that? For example, when one song ends and a new one starts, it still shows the previous song as selected. You have to Command - L (or Controls -> Go to current song) to move to the new current song. It's completely nonsensical that it wouldn't flow automatically!

I definitely get the feeling that some young geeks got together and figured things needed changing for no other reason than that they could, so they did. How else to account for unreadable typefaces, keeping track of the current song, removing perfectly useable listing options, etc.?

In the first image in this article you show a "flow chart" above the song list. How did you get that to show up? All I see on my screen is the list of songs. Thanks.

What I really miss is a way to view playlists, with album art, that retains the order of tracks I've placed in that playlist.

For example, imagine that I have three albums in my playlist. They are not sorted by artist, album, or year. Instead they are sorted by the order in which I want to listen to them, which happens to not be in alphabetical or any other order, other than - I wanna hear this one, that one, and then that one. If you view this playlist in "List" view, my albums are correctly sorted in the order I want. However, if I change it to "Grid" or "Artist List" so I can see some artwork, my three albums are now resorted for me without my asking. (by title, artist, genre, year or rating) They need to add Sort Order!

I haven't seen anyone address this shortcoming. Maybe by clearly laying it out here, more forces will join my cause. And yes, I have reported this feature request to Apple.

It's showing the "Column Browser" and this can be turned on or off under the View menu.

I totally agree. No way that this is an improvement.

I agree with the sentiment that many changes were made for the sake of change with no or minimum benefit. Please bring back the Cover Flow!. Or create a new Next Up view, similar to the old DJ view. It is nice to have a "launching pad" when listening to music so that we can see what just played and what is next...

I HATE this interface. As odd as iTunes has always been, this just sucks. Guess we needed a reminder that Apple makes design mistakes like everyone else.

In summary, iTunes 11 is a complete disaster as far as UI is concerned (similarly to the equally-horrendous iPad Music app), and yet another sign that the terrible iOSification and dumbing down of OS X apps hasn't finished.

No list view with artwork, album views that seemingly don't show the transition of songs being played, no cover flow, no resizeable artwork, minuscule fonts on large screens...

In all, virtually ZERO improvements over the previous version, which runs absolutely fine on my iMac with no lags, crashes or bugs whatsoever - I am glad I didn't "upgrade" to it, and won't do that unless I am absolutely forced to.

p.s.: By the way, how come we can't even post anything via Safari on this website? I had to resort to Firefox to post this very comment!!!

So many bugs. Play-counts won't update and last played date doesn't update which makes smart playlists based on those criteria useless. The user interface is a mess. Apple should be ashamed of this release.

Absolute bullish*t. Two album's, mysteriously out of order. Now I know why, thanks to your comment. Know the quickest solution?

Cheers
