This update made me wonder if Microsoft had acquired Evernote... if they can not make the user interface comprehensible again, then the new features may have a chance to shine. But at the moment I can't for the life of me figure out how to move a note from one notebook to another... or some other basic functions that used to be obvious.

Moving the note from notebook to the other was pretty intuitive for me. Just 2 finger click or control click on the note and the contextual menu that appears will let you move it to any other notebook. I find that easier than clicking and dragging.

In the upper right corner of each note is an "I" that you click on to change the attributes of the note (including what notebook its in). Also, you can select multiple notes and you will be given an option to move multiple notes at once to another notebook.

I really liked the previous (pre 5.0) version of Evernote. It looked a bit dated, but was a wonderful "Everything Box." I agree that there are some nice enhancements in 5.0, but it's no longer usable for me. The fixed font choice and shade make parts of the interface very difficult to read. Gray on gray for text in a productivity app is really not a good idea. See the side bar for a particularly egregious example. Older users, in particular, are likely to be very, very unhappy with the choices made here. Another irritating change is how the intuitive and flexible search tool in the previous version has become a click-fest. It looks like the functionality is still there, but it's buried under various sidebar icons and pulldown menus. The earlier search made it a joy to wander through my notes. Now it's just frustrating. It's all frustrating enough, in fact, that I now rarely use Evernote.

Evernote is still a great idea, but Evernote 5.0 is not a good realization of that idea.

Tom, I strongly disagree with your Rating of 4.5 for Evernote Mac 5.
I would say that many, if not most, of the users in the Evernote Forum would also disagree.

In fact I highly recommend that readers do NOT upgrade to EN Mac 5, nor to EN iOS 5. Stay with the old version until Evernote has resolved major issues and loss of features in Ver 5.

While Evernote Mac 3 (there was no Ver 4) was not perfect, it was far, far better than Ver 5.

For insight into the serious issues with Ver 5, readers should review the threads on the Evernote Forum:

Just a cautionary note: it may be fantastic software, but Evernote failed utterly in my recent attempt to implement it on my machines (and I'm an experienced Mac user). It apparently choked on trying to sync between two different accounts (my wife's and mine) on our two machines (Mini and MB Pro). Despite investing a lot of my time, I was simply unable to get it to sync consistently, and then it stopped saving new input for no obvious reason. The help files were no help, nor was the help desk by e-mail (expect a delay of several days if you don't have the paid version). I finally gave up, and am using a different notes program. Given the reported large user base, I assume my experience must be idiosyncratic and atypical, and the software user interface is very attractive, the free basic version is generous. But I am commenting here to note that things are not necessarily always going to go smoothly, and more modest notes software that actually works consistently might be preferable for some.

I'm finding the same thing with Evernote. I've been battling some thorny 3rd party conflicts with Mountain Lion that the Apple engineers tell me involve the Evernote software. It appears to be crashing my computer.

Evernote 5 also crashed my computer to such a point I had to call Apple Support for assistance. It WAS a great program, but as a result of the update and the crash I have deleted it from my iPhone, iPad and iMac -- too bad because it was so much better before they "updated" it.
