Ironically, after all the hype about how many problems Apple's Maps app has, The very first time I tried Google maps it gave me an error. I have yet to get an error using Apple's Maps app. In Google Maps, I searched for Staples (office supply store nearby). It showed a location approximately when an Office Depot store is (and not exactly right for that either). In Apple maps it located it fine. I took the street address that Apple Maps gave me, and entered it into Google Maps. The pin located correctly but told me that it was a doctor's office. I drove to where the Apple maps showed me, and Staples was there, and no doctor's offices anywhere that I could see. I'm in the suburbs of Cincinnati.

Score so far in actual use.

Apple's Maps: about 8 out of 8 attempts correct.
GOogle Maps: zero out of 1 attempt correct.

I think the key thing to remember is that Google had got complacent with it's old maps app on the iPhone with no real updates for ages. Apple kicks them out with it's own app, with new features such as turn by turn navigation, and in no time at all Google has responded with a greatly improved app compared to it's old offering. Competition is a great thing and it's win-win for the user.
My initial impression is that right now that the Google app has the edge, but it's no bad thing to have more than one maps app with you and I'm sure there's an Apple update just around the corner. Game on!

Except that Apple made that App, not Google. Google never made or maintained the Google Maps App on iOS 5 and earlier.

The Google Maps app may have better navigation data overall but I do find it has a couple of problems with the turn by turn navigation. When I start trips with it, Google Maps seems to get confused about street names and takes a few seconds to make it's mind up. When coming to turns it pauses in mid sentence, eg "turn left at.........Main Street". This second problem is really annoying when I'm driving at 60 or more kilometers per hour.

In my part of the world I'm preferring to use Apple Maps but I'll keep Google Maps on my iPhone 5 as a backup.

One thing that no one seems to have mentioned: I have a car with Bluetooth and obviously I use it for all my hands-freee phone calls. I had wondered why Apple's Maps did not use that feature when giving turn-by-turn directions. If the car radio is on, it is sometimes difficult to hear the audio portion of the directions because they emanate from only the small speaker on the iPhone. With Google, the audio portion of the turn-by-turn directions work the same way as for the "built-in" GPS. The radio sound is muted and the voice comes right over the car speakers. * Pretty nice! * And one other feature on the Google software I like better... At the bottom of the screen is an estimate for the remaining travel time to your destination. That feature, also, is missing from Apple's Maps. It's a VERY useful piece of information! Like many of the other people commenting, I will use both map Apps, but for those two features alone, my first choice will be Google's software.

You must have something screwed up on your iPhone. I get Apple Maps voice directions over Bluetooth just fine.

I used it instead of iOS maps when all the flak was flying but no more

The main problem I have with Google Maps is that it isjust plain wrong about half the time I use it. Not just a few Metres out but Kilometres, the wrong village even! I have had it unable to find addresses and it constantly miss-labels roads.

I still have it on my iPhone but frankly there hasn't been one occasion where Google maps has found what I wanted.

I had to look for, 'bakeries in town', a 'coffee shop north of town', and most important when I renewed my drivers license, the local office to do it. Apple failed on all three, and on several more. Since I'm on an ipad, I use good old google maps online browser icon - they found every place, and gave me choices. Apple maps couldn't find one, while google maps told me there are 3 offices for licenses in town, and directed me to the closest one. Apple maps fails if it can't locate from a search. What i would really like to do is be able to delete the apple apps i don't use, instead of stuffing them in a junk icon.
