I find PCCalc very slow to start up which makes it painful to use. I've always wondered why Apple didn't put their iPhone calculator on the ipad.

My favorite calculator is CalcBot.

Another wonderfully useful App for new iPad owners is Skype. I used it for the first time yesterday to video chat with my brother in Italy.

CNN? Really? Of all the news sources on the web, you recommend them? You must live where weed is legal and smoke it 24/7.

Why do valid disagreements have to be followed by unnecessary personal attacks?

Agreed! I recommend those who need to create personal attacks create a King/Queen of the Hill app to satisfy that need.

Welcome to the internet. That was mild compared to a lot of stuff I see daily.

Rather a blah bunch of apps IMHO. Dropbox is next to essential, but other than that, meh.

Recommend some apps that'll wow the new user.

Examples:

An astronomy app, like Distant Suns or GoSkyWatch.

Some tool and/or augmented reality apps, e.g. Theodolite HD, Clinometer HD or others.

A navigation app; I like MotionX, Google Earth or Gaia GPS.

Alternative search apps. DuckDuckGo, Google (voice and goggles yeah!), Mercury.

Organizers: no mention of Evernote?? Another necessity.

PIMs: TaskPaper. Fantastical.

Photo: SketchBook, PS Express, SnapSeed. Free.

CNN? Not a great app IMO and I have used it plenty. And you forgot to mention that you can't watch live video without paying for a full cable subscription.

How about Flipboard? Now that's a great app for reading news.
