Movie clips for iPhoto

Config. iMac 3.4GHz I7 4GB OSX 10.7.5 iPhoto '11 9.4.2 iMovie '11 9.0.8 I have a sony camera- HX200 that does HD movies. When I try to import them from the MS to iPhoto, it will sometimes work. When it doesn't then iPhoto locks up, and it takes a full boot by the power button. Attempting to import that clip again will result in locking up again. I tried iMovie with the same result. The video clips are 1920 x 1080 MP4 H.264 The length of the clip does not seem to matter. This feels like a buffer overflow problem because it hoses the system, not just iPhoto.
