According to Apple, the iPad 4 can handle:
Quote
H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
These videos are in an MKV container, however, I'm thinking there may be some hope of playing them on the iPad without losing visual quality through a straight conversion. My plan is to demux the MKV into its separate audio and video streams, then convert the audio to AAC-LC and finally remux those streams into a MOV container. Of course, this depends on if the video stream already meets the requirements of the iPad, which leads to my question...
First, the (relevant) specs of the videos are:
<> General / Container Stream #1: Total Video Streams for this File : 1 Total Audio Streams for this File : 2 (two different languages; I'm planning on only keeping one in the final MOV) Total Subtitle Streams for this File: 1 (I'm not planning on keeping the subtitles in the final MOV) Video Codecs Used : AVC (seems good so far) Audio Codecs Used : Vorbis / Vorbis (planning on converting to AAC) SubTitle Codecs Used : SSA File Format : Matroska Play Time : 24mn 12s Total Stream BitRate : 1 367 Kbps Video Stream #1: Codec (Human Name) : AVC (seems good; from what I understand, H.264 and AVC are names for the same thing?) Codec (FourCC) : V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC Codec Profile : High@L3.0 (seems good, the iPad 4 can handle High Profile L4.1) Frame Width : 640 pixels Frame Height : 480 pixels (also seems good, the iPad 4 can handle H.264 up to 1080p) Frame Rate : 23.976 fps (only thing I'm not sure about... the iPad 4 tech specs page only lists 30 fps, so I'm not sure if this will work... does the 30 fps support listed for the iPad 4 implicitly imply support for 30 fps and below?) Total Frames : 34824 Display Aspect Ratio : 4:3 (perfect for the iPad!) Scan Type : Progressive Color Space : YUV Codec Settings (Summary) : CABAC / 3 Ref Frames QF (like Gordian Knot) : 0.156 Codec Settings (CABAC) : Yes Codec Settings (Reference Frames) : 3 Video Stream Length : 24mn 12s 452ms Video Stream BitRate (Nominal) : 1 230 Kbps Bit Depth : 8 bits Video Stream Size : 199 MiB (84%) Video Encoder : x264 - core 80 r1376M 3feaec2 Video Encoder (Settings) : cabac=1 / ref=3 / deblock=1:0:0 / analyse=0x Audio Stream #1: Codec : Vorbis (will convert to AAC-LC) ... Audio Stream #2: (not using in final MOV) Codec : Vorbis ... Subtitle Stream #1: (not planning on using in final MOV unless the iPad 4 can handle SSA subs in MOV containers?) Format : SSA Codec ID : S_TEXT/SSA Codec Info : Sub Station Alpha </>
So, my question is: will this work?
