I suggest you remove that line from the article, because that is factually not true. Armed robbery is nothing new in France. This just happens to be an internationally recognized target with a high value of stolen electronics.

You can bet they do. I wouldn't be surprised if the theft was actually a way of getting traceable devices into the hands of criminals and terrorists as a means of tracking them. National security agencies have used such stratagems in the past to surreptitiously dump thousands of "stolen" cell phones in hot zones around the world for the purpose of keeping track of users of these devices.
