I suggest you remove that line from the article, because that is factually not true. Armed robbery is nothing new in France. This just happens to be an internationally recognized target with a high value of stolen electronics.

I guess they'll have to have an armed guard at every one of their stores! Protect the iPads!

Do they really think Apple has no record of the serial numbers etc. for these devices?

You can bet they do. I wouldn't be surprised if the theft was actually a way of getting traceable devices into the hands of criminals and terrorists as a means of tracking them. National security agencies have used such stratagems in the past to surreptitiously dump thousands of "stolen" cell phones in hot zones around the world for the purpose of keeping track of users of these devices.
