The real shame is that the people who read WSJ are also the ones who manipulate the stock prices. So, right or wrong, this report caused Apple's stock to decline by over 18 points today. Unfortunately, it will now take a lot longer to recover those dollars than it did to lose them. Like everything, WSJ could publish a full retraction tomorrow on the front page and the stock still wouldn't recover as much as it lost.

It's a specious report. How many iPhone 5 Apple has sold has nothing to do with shutting down an assembly line for LCD panels.
Apple is obviously switching over from Gorilla Glass 2 to the much stronger Gorilla Glass 3, which was demonstrated by Corning at last week's CES. It's A LOT stronger, and from their demo Corning apparently is very proud of this fact.
Apple is Corning's primary customer for the stuff, and it would in all probability be destined for the iPhone 5S. So the timing of any so-called shutdown is very appropriate. Goodbye iPhone 5, hello iPhone 5S.
Not to mention, Apple may be putting Gorilla Glass 3 on (both) the iPads.

Good theory, but we're still about 9 months away from the next iPhone (5S?). Apple typically starts ramping up production for the next model about 2 months before the debut, not 9 months.

People are reacting to these rumors as if they're based on fact. We simply don't know one way or the other. However, if you're going to treat rumors as fact, you should also consider the rumors which suggest the iPhone has moved to a 6 month cycle. If that were actually the case, the rumor about reducing product supply of a given component would actually make perfect sense.
That said, I would suggest we just sit tight and listen to the earnings next week. I'm thinking it's probably a good time to buy some Apple stock as well.

I am a Registered Investment Adviser and I am long Apple in personal accounts as well as through options in client accounts. What I find interesting about all these recent Apple stories is that they have come during the period before earnings known as the "silent period". Apple can't respond formally or informally to these rumors. The earnings will be released one week from today, after the market close, on January 23, 2013. There will be a conference call that afternoon/early evening. We will learn then what is really going on and if these rumors were legit or not.
