I agree that Apple should offer a cheaper iPhone, but I don't see why it should be limited to "emerging" markets.

Apple should not listen to Sculley - if he recommends a cheaper iPhone then it must be exactly the wrong thing to do.

I paid $200 for my iPhone 4 over two years ago and I use the crap out of it every day. If a person can't get $200 worth of value out of their smartphone, maybe they don't need a smartphone. The only reason I haven't upgraded to an iPhone 5 is because I don't want to lose my unlimited data plan. I am hoping competition heats up and the carriers bring it back.

The man who ran Apple into the ground recommends a cheap iPhone and says that Tim Cook is the right CEO. Sounds like it's time to sell my stock.

Except that you paid around $20 extra per month for that perk. $240 over 2 years. So you paid at least $480 for the phone.

You don't have to loose you Unlimited Data Plan if you upgrade to iPhone 5.
I am running just fine with an Unlimited Data Plan and iPhone 5. You can't share the plan, no Face Time or tethering, but you don't have to give it up to upgrade. Make sure AT&T does try to sneak in a change as others have reported, review the final docs.

The mistakes of the past are meant to be learned from and he is one of the great teachers for Apple to recognize (he said sarcastically...).

I don't believe you'll lose your unlimited plan. Unless things have changed, AT&T (and I assume Verizon) will let grandfathered subscribers keep their current plans.

More than likely he paid back full retail price plus interest and fees. Service providers don't "subsidize" anything. They provide the device for an up front down payment and what is essentially a loan with a minimum number of monthly payments or repayment of the balance of the loan, plus fees, for early termination.

The difference with the carrier "loan", mistakenly referred to as a subsidy, is that you continue to make monthly payments well after the handset has been paid in full if you don't upgrade to another handset or opt for a cheaper service plan at the end of the contract period.

Re: "Former Apple CEO John Sculley has said that the company should focus on making a cheaper iPhone for emerging markets."

Any news on when Bloomberg expects to interview current and past members of the janitorial staff at Apple?

Isn't it cute when the guy that single handedly almost ruined the (now) most valuable computer company in america talks about how they're doing something wrong?

Very true. He kicked out Jobs, and almost ran the company into a ditch. Maybe he should just focus his attention on his memoirs instead of posting worthless advice that's neither needed or wanted.
