Re: ' “Flourishing” is probably the best adjective to use to describe the marketplace for small electronic devices aimed at tracking every step you take. Companies like Fitbit, Striiv, Nike, and Jawbone all offer trackers...'

The fitness tracker / smart watch market is just about ready for some serious Apple Innovative Disruption ™. Many of the requirements for such a move are already in place:

1. Booming market + mindshare? Looks like it.
2. Many incompatible competing devices? Yes.
3. Huge profits? Maybe not.

#3 is the killer. How much money could Apple actually make if they launched a very successful fitness tracker / smart watch? Would it make more money than, say, the iPod nano? Would it be worth the time, effort, and risk?

I think the fitness tracker market is here to stay, but it's a niche market for pro athletes and serious amateurs. Not sure about the smart watch market. Could be a fad. Could be the next Pet Rock.

(Note to Macworld: it would be great to be able to edit one's posts, in case there are typos.)
