.mp4 files not playing

Hi there, was just wondering why video files which I transferred to my MacBook are not playing. They had been working but aren't any more. Any ideas on what might be wrong? Thanks for any help.

What happens when you try? Any messages in the console?

I don't even get a message, in fact it doesn't even open the file.

I don't even get a message, in fact it doesn't even open the file.

What's the "it" that doesn't open the file? Are you just double-clicking a movie file in Finder or trying to open it from within a running application? If the latter, what application(s) have you tried, and does the open-file dialog indicate that the file could be opened or is it greyed out? When you say you don't get a message do you just mean on-screen when you try to open the file, or have you looked at the Console application to view logged messages?
