I think that in the hoopla about Apple's earnings, quite a part of it is due to analysts not understanding or not taking seriously this little piece of information:

"The most important thing to Apple is to make the best products in the world"

Under Steve Jobs the focus on product was in your face all the time, and the analysts still didn't get it. Tim Cook hammers at this point at every opportunity but it still seems like a lot of people don't get it.

Two points, one spoken and one not. Spoken is quality of the user experience. Not spoken is profit. Who gets anywhere near as profitable as Apple?

re: cannibalisation

dear mr cook: please cannibalise the new imacs. you made a mistake making them so thin that they can't support an optical drive. it's a desktop machine after all. supposedly an all-in-one. also put the sd slot back on the side. ergonomically, sticking it on the back sucks. getting rid of the "chin" under the display would have been a better move than eliminating the depth of the device. please try again.

my imac is getting old and i'll need to replace it soon but i won't buy the new one cuz it's entirely wrong.

thanks

dear rottenberries,
I agree with everything you've said above but please realize, thos is Macworld’s consolidated transcript of Tim Cook’s statements during the analyst conference call. It's not actual a post by Mr. Cook, and he won't be reading your comment here.

Can't say I disagree with what you said, but thin sells and looks good. Don't think it's going to revert back. Silver lining: instead of Apple's optical drive, get a third party blu-ray drive for the same price and use it to watch high-def movies.

the MacBook Air is the number 1 selling computer that Apple sells and it doesn't have an optical drive. the iMac was CD-Rom only, no 3.5 floppies. Apple has always phased out the dying medium before everyone else.

I agree that it is annoying for users who may actually want an optical drive.

The "chin" is has become part of the products iconic look. That is like telling BMW to change how they style the grill.

My iMac is really old as well and if I had the money I would buy a new iMac in a heart beat along with one of those little optical readers. If you don't want to buy one for yourself please think about gifting one to me.
