I always appreciate information like this. Even if I am already familiar with most of the tips there's always room to learn new ones. With that being said one of my pet peeves is the fact that the people who need to read this... don't. You know the types. They swarm the Apple discussions forums demanding to be spoon fed how to do something like print, for example. They are greatly offended when someone recommends they do some research on their own. They think they are entitled to be led by the nose to the answer. And if, god forbid, the answer doesn't them then look out for the tantrum that follows.
Thanks, Mr. Breen, for the lesson today.

I wish I had this article a few months back when I was trying to explain printing on a Mac for the first time to my mother. It doesn't help that I don't print very often, but I can't remember the last time I've been that frustrated using OS X then when trying to print something other than a standard 8.5x11 text document. UX in this area continues to get a big thumbs down.
I don't understand why the printing options are organized they way they are. It's not intuitive. For example: 'Scale to fit paper size' is under Paper Handling when it should be consolidated into in Layout, yet 'Two-sided Printing' is under Output Settings and not Paper Handling. I should clarify that's when printing to an Epson multifunction printer. When printing to an HP MFP, a '2-sided' checkbox appears right at the top next to 'copies'. Huh? I would think that turning off color to print in grayscale would be located in Color Options but it's not, it's in Print Settings (also on Epson, different again for HP). Let's say I want to center a print on the paper, how do I do it? That option isn't in Layout, in fact, I can't find it anywhere. Part of the frustration is that not all of the basic functions I need to control are in the standard settings sections (Layout, Paper Handling, etc), they are in secondary sections underneath. That would be tolerable accept the names and functionality of these sections change with each printer. If you use different printers at home and at work, good luck trying to remember where the settings you need are. Very frustrating.

I love these series of how-to articles. I wish, though, that MW had a forum (or does it) where I can ask somewhat related questions without hijacking the comment thread. I have a HP Color Laserjet 3800dn, and when color matching is left to ColorSync, the entire page gets printed yellow. Since I can't see a way to change this default setting, every page I print, if I forget to change the color match setting, or forget to use the proper saved setting, or when someone else uses the printer, the result is a whole page filled with yellow. Very frustrating. I've asked HP and even Apple forum but no help. Do you know what's going on? How do I change the default color match settings?
Edit: Nice! I didn't realize comments posted get imported as a forum discussion!

Printing in reverse does have a practical use: When you want a double-sided printout and your printer doesn't support this, print the odd-numbered pages first. Then you can put these sheets back into the paper tray without manually rearranging the paper sheets if you "print in reverse" to print the even-number pages.

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, iPhoto no longer has the options for printing standard size prints, Number Up and so forth. I have updated my HP printer driver to the latest version, but all of that is gone! Very disturbing. One more reason among the many for me to go back to Snow Leopard. I'm really not liking this Lion-Mountain Lion thing at all!
