This is working for me already since Mountain Lion. One of the disks is connected but powered off (the other one is an Airport disk). I do that, because the connected disk keeps running, while the Airport disk is switched off 5 minutes after the backup by Time Machine. Every 10 days I get a message from Time Machine to connect the USB-connected-one, because it is not available. Missed this remark in your article.
