The concept of the tesseract predates Marvel by almost a century (as you can infer from my user name which I've used for almost 9 years, I'm quite familiar with it :-) )
A tesseract is a four-dimensional cube, first postulated by mathematicians in the late 1800s, and popularized in the 1940s by Robert Heinlein's short story "-- And He Built a Crooked House --".
Based on the way it's described on the Esoterism website, it seems more likely to have been inspired by this original meaning rather than the object in the Thor/Captain America/Avengers movies.
