I want to remove Memory or Memory Monitor from the Menu Bar. I am running 10.5.8. Command Click does not work. There is not an application or utility called memory monitor on my computer. Deleting Activity Monitor did not work. Memory Monitor does not appear in Logged In items in my user preferences. Memory Monitor does not appear in the Core Services folder either. I have searched Goggle for over an hour this morning hoping to find the answer without any luck whatsoever.

If this is something that has to be done in terminal you can assume I know nothing about using terminal.

Anyone know? I am hoping it is something simple I have just overlooked.

Thanks in advance.

Ron.

There are other ways to get something to run at login than through the Login Items section of System Preferences, and in some ways those other techniques are preferable. I don't believe that's a stock component of the OS providing that menu bar item so the first thing I'd try is opening a Terminal window and typing "launchctl list | grep -v com.apple". That should list any 3rd-party software that's registered with the auto-launch mechanism and might help narrow down your search.

I recognize several menu bar items that I use. I don't see anything that is Memory or Memory Monitor. Am I missing something?

Several things in there I *don't* recognize but nothing jumping out by name as a good candidate. Can you post a section of a screen capture showing this memory display? There seem to be a handful of 3rd-party products that offer such a thing. Here are two popular ones:

http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/

And what do you mean when you say you "deleted" Activity Monitor? Please don't tell me you've actually gotten rid of it.

For some reason (newbie?) I am not allowed to post attachments... according to help I have to do this to post attachments: "To begin, press the choose file button. " I don't have a choose File button on my screen.

I have posted the image on photobucket so you can see it. "The stuff to the right with the mountain is just my desktop image."

Those don't seem to be what I have. There is a program called "memory monitor" but that doesn't look like what I have either. What baffles me the most is that there is absolutely nothing I can find on my computer that calls it self "memory" or "memory monitor." If it is some kind of third party add on I think I could find it somewhere. How can this be? I am so frustrated.

In desperation I tried "control click" instead of "command click." Doing so brought up a menu in Memory Monitor that include the option to "quit engine" which removed it and solved the problem. It seems obvious now to try that... but it didn't for the two days I spent looking for a solution. Wow. (Don't get old or sick... like me.)

Thanks for your help anyway.

Could have maybe been a lesser known utility called Memory Monitor from Bernhard Baehr ...

Nope. He conveniently provided the source. It doesn't offer any form of menu bar presence.

Does it come back when you reboot? If so, and it's annoying, I have a suggestion. Open up Apple's Activity Monitor app (which I still hope you didn't delete) and click on the "% CPU" column until it's both highlighted and has a downward-pointing triangle. Now, keeping an eye on that window, click on the offending item in the menu bar so it displays its normal menu and rapidly move the mouse up and down over the menu items. You're going to have dozens of running processes in the Activity Monitor window, but most of them should be very low CPU usage. You'll want to watch for one that moves up the list while you're wiggling the mouse over the menu and then drops back down when you stop. Once you see it, click it and press Cmd-I; the window that pops up should help you find the app.

Where ever this Memory Monitor is... is beyond my memory. (pun unintended) When I booted my computer today Memory Monitor was back. I control clicked and instead of choosing the "quit engine" command I chose the "configure" menu option. This brought me to a little utility I rarely use thanks to the Dock. The program is a good launcher/application management utility called You Control. That utility has the ability to add things to the menu bar. Memory Monitor was on the You Control menu as such a thing. I deleted it from You Control and presto-chango it is no more.

Thanks again for the help Bastion.
