If I disable those two options, I still get crashes. However, when I type the secret text into Safari's Address Bar, I don't get crashes; I get a Finder window opening at /.

The bad news: Data Detector code is pervasive.
The good news: Should be an easy fix. Should be easy to test the fix.
The great news: Very obscure. Few users ever type File://<anything>.
The best news: Trivial workaround: lower-case leading "f".

Lion and iOS 5.1.1 seem to just log the anomaly and move on. Another Mountain Lion and iOS 6.X feature?

From Safari's Reader in 10.8.2, TextEdit crashes every time I try to copy this article into it, as plain or rich text, regardless of Language & Text settings.

This has been fixed in 10.8.3.
