Hi Chris,

DisplayOut was one of the main reasons I JB my iPhones, because I love to be able to mirror iPhone to the 27" monitor to play games and to play Netflix movies, (I hate how Netflix requires SilverLight plugin to play movies on the Mac and I refuse to allow any Microsoft's junk to pollute my Mac.). Since I found this app called AirServer, DisplayOut is no longer needed. For those who don't know what AirServer is, it's an app install on Mac or Windows PC, it uses AirPlay to mirror any iOS devices to any monitor WIRELESSLY! It has a 7-day trial. And it's only $15.00 to buy, no jb required, well worth it.

The other reason I JB was for the ability to use the iPhone as a hotspot, then I read that AT&T is cracking down on it, so I stopped.

Now I found no reason at all to JB.

The number 1 thing I would jailbreak for is getting a quick access panel for some settings toggles for cellular, wifi, bluetooth, volume and brightness. I'd like the phone to quit spelling out the carrier name (never changes) and instead use that space to give me the name of the wifi network I'm on.
And, maybe - if it exists - something like allowing more icons per screen and per folder.

But, so far I've resisted temptation, because we have lost countless hours, to the equivalent of several days worth, sorting out our iPhones' with failed iOS upgrades and phone upgrades with iTunes backups that don't restore folders & apps. And, I don't want to tempt Murphy's law and unleash the digital doom gods putting me through that mess once again or give me a non-functioning phone.

I JB'd my pad and phone yesterday. Cydia was overwhelmed and the weather app kept crashing so I restored and will wait for another day.

I like SBSettings, iBlacklist, and MyWi of course.

It's not as valuable as it used to be but I usually run JB for a few months and then restore back to my nice, stable phone.

Does evasi0n work on a Verizon iPhone 4? I purchased software from iphoneunlockfactory.com that I believe turned out to be a scam, because I contacted their tech support twice and never got a response. So then I contacted SWREG to complain and THEY never responded. $29 down the drain.

Anyhoo, I still need a JB solution for this phone, which apparently doesn't have a replaceable SIM card (or at least there's no slot). Can someone point me to a reliable vendor for a solution for this phone? I really need a solution, big-time.

I think you're confused between Jailbreak and Unlock. Evasion does NOT unlock your phone.

The one thing I really miss from jailbreaking my original iPhone was the ability to have 5 icons in the iPhone dock. It didn't always look pretty but it sure was functional and helpful.

I'd more than happy with the icons a bit smaller and fitting an extra one in there. Especially on the iPad with all that wasted space.

I'm always frustrated having to thumb around to get quick access to frequently used settings and apps. On the iPhone its this way. On the iPad its that way. This app gives you easy access to airplay on the iPhone, but on the iPad its inexplicably hidden ...

That and missing the 4th row on a keyboard to get to numbers and symbols. Do the people at Apple never enter passwords with numbers & symbols. You can't tell me there's no room for that extra row, when all there is on the screen is the magnified box to type it in ...

But, maybe MacWorld could do an(other) article on improvements they'd like to see to iOS. There is stuff that was understandably missing in original releases for first releases with a limited size screen. You have to start with something. But, so many versions later, I really would have thought we would have had the best of both worlds, all the way around, by now.

I guess maybe I should jailbreak after all.

The most important jailbreak app available for both security and privacy is Firewall iP <http://yllier.webs.com/firewall.html>, which allows you to control ALL outgoing device connections. This controls the silent user tracking performed clandestinely by many apps, and also controls ads. The functionality is very similar to Little Snitch on OS X.

Another very important application is ssh, which allows secure communication. Treat the mobile device like any computer:

Change the root and mobile account passwords from their default "alpine" to secure passwords, then turn off root and password ssh logins entirely and use ssh keys:

Setup ssh keys:

client$ ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048 -C client_name
[Securely copy ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub from client to server.]
server$ cat id_rsa.pub > ~/.ssh/known_hosts

edit /etc/sshd_config

PermitRootLogin no
PasswordAuthentication no
ChallengeResponseAuthentication no

Reboot the device and you have a rock solid ssh server on iOS.

Ah, that may well be. The solution I purchased was supposed to unlock and jailbreak — two-part process. At any rate, can anyone point me in the direction of a solution that will work with the Verizon iPhone 4?

Have more control over your equipment in trade for less corporate managed security — sounds like Android. I wonder if some jailbreakers wouldn't just be better off with an Android phone or pad right out of the box while saving a bit of money as well.

Chris, Please let me know if UnrestrictPremium2 or anything else you know of solves the following problem. I use Reflection (like AirServer) to do screencasts featuring iOS 6 devices. It, too, lacks the ability to show touch events but I can create those in post so it's not that big an issue for me. However, I am totally unable to capture the interface of the iOS video player while a video is in progress. I do a lot of accessibility-oriented work and need to talk about how one selects alternate audio tracks and soft subtitle tracks. It would also be great to be able to talk about selecting chapter markers from a chapter track but iOS 6 doesn't support at all.

You shouldn't be paying for it at all. Jailbreaking and unlocking has been available for free since the first iPhone.

Since buying factory unlocked iP3GS and iP4S, I haven't jailbroken my own iDevices but have done so for many others, mostly members of my extended family.

All I ever want to do is use my own fonts on my iPhone, but the free app (via Cydia) hasn't been updated so I have to stick with what's on the iPhone & iPad. I prefer a smaller font size for my Contacts, Favourites and Call List.
