How do I know what disk I need to replace the hard drive?

I note that Apple is replacing some hard drives but not mine. Since I did not use my computer that much and it is relatively new I find it highly suspicious that mine went out about the same time they are replacing others.

Anyway, obviously some were bad drives and it seems to me indicative their replacement program did not go as far as it should have.

I haven't a lot of money and I need to try to do this myself but since my computer i unusable I have no no way of knowing the disc size, etc. but I would like to get one that lasts longer than a year or two.

So can someone tell me what sort of disk I should be looking for please? Thanks.

I assume you checked this page: http://www.apple.com...imac-harddrive/

You didn't really give much information about your machine or how you've determined that it's not covered by the replacement program. Sometimes drives just fail. That's not what programs like this are for; they're for situations where a production run of drives is known to be failure prone and if your machine can be determined not to have a drive from that run it's just bad timing. If you do end up needing to replace it yourself because it's not covered, your computer has a SATA II drive interface. Essentially any drive you might buy new today will work in it.

You can find specifications for most any Macintosh here:

http://www.everymac.com/

One of this site's sponsor's, Other World Computing (OWC), has easy way to find many parts. Click on the "My OWC" button in the top left and then find your Mac model using their menu system. Then click on one of the categories of parts they offer. Even if you do not order the HD from them they have many instructional videos on exactly how to do it. If in doubt ask before placing your order. I've ordered parts from them for both older PowerPC Macs and Intel Macs. Following their esearch I was able to install more RAM in a Power Mac and MacBook Pro that Apple's original specifications.

Keep in mind that Apple does not make the actual hard drives - they are made by 3rd parties. My first PowerPC G4 lost its HD in the first 6 months. Last year a single Western Digital drive I bought from a lot of several drives went bad after a year. Other drives I've had have lasted many years.
