"although it did so at a 512 by 384 resolution that matched its compact ancestors."

Not quite. Black and white compact Macs were 512 by 342.

I think the reason that "Apple historians" look at it in a negative light is because it represented everything that was wrong with Apple.

The "praise" you give it were not "features" that most folks cared one lick about. "A hobbyist's dream machine"... seriously?

Despite the hyperbole, I appreciate the walk down memory lane.

p.s. my 1988 Mac SE was probably my favorite computer (maybe after my first computer, an Apple IIe).

Yep, you're right. Insert an "almost" before "matched" in that sentence, and everything will be fine. :)

What's become very clear to me is that "everything that is wrong with Apple" and "everything that is right with Apple" frequently were and are one and the same: absurd arrogance and egomania; ridiculous hardware made of expensive, rare components; aesthetics over cost, function and sometimes practicality.

The new Apple has perhaps narrowed the gap between the impractical and the practical, between the beautiful and poetic and the efficient and functional, but it makes me happy that the company's dreams still exceed its grasp from time to time.

I can't believe how many MILES I lugged this thing around. I loved this Mac. I was traveling for a large national retailer and I took this with me when I did all my store visits. Most the people in the back office (PC Only) looked at me like I had two heads when I pulled this out of it's travel bag.

Still have it. It still runs.
