There have been 1 TB laptop drives for a while, now. However, they are only spinning at 5,400 rpm. Well, there are 7,200 rpm 1 TB drives, too, but they are about 50% thicker, making them not fit the MacBook pro.



What is keeping hard drive manufacturers from finally coming out with a thin-enough 7,200 rpm 1 TB drive?

According to the Hitachi website, they offer a 1 TB 7200 rpm drive that is 9.5 mm tall. Here is the spec sheet: http://www.hgst.com/...TS7K1000_ds.pdf

I cannot tell for sure if that is this drive on NewEgg, but I don't believe it is:

Hitachi uses confusing model numbers. They seem to have two different model numbers for every drive and places don't consistently use both.
