I use an antenna for my TV signals and would like to know about using a computer for DVR needs.
I've used VCR's, RAM recorders by Panasonic and a Digital Stream DVR to mostly limited effectiveness and reliability.
I figure I need a TV tuner (El Gato?) and a computer with a hard drive, but, what software do I need? Do I need a monitor (or laptop computer) or can my TV be used?
My TV has HDMI inputs, so I'd want to connect the computer using that. I am willing to dedicate a computer to this project.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bob.

If you did one of the Elgato EyeTV tuners, then it comes with their EyeTV software...so you should not need any other software.
If you do some other tuner, then they also might come with software...if not, then you can purchase the EyeTV software separately...just check the compatible tuner list: http://www.elgato.co...roduct3.en.html
And assuming you have an input on your TV that will work wit your Mac, then yes, you could use your TV.

Thanks for the reply.
In my further research, it looks like a late Mac mini would be a good choice as it has a decent size hard drive and will output HDMI signals. My TV will accept HDMI, so that's a good match.
The only fly in the ointment is the cost. A late model mini is pricey and the Eye TV Hybrid tuner adds another $150 to the price of admission.
Guess I'll have to give a lot more thought to this idea.
Bob.
