As someone who needs to record video from the web to look at later, I still find it to be easy to use and does the trick. I have tried others for video capture but they don't map the ease of use Snapz provides. I still recommend it if you need to record video/audio (vs. still shots) - such as a news story from the web (Jakstra also works well for streaming video-but it doesn't always work-Snapz will always record).

I still use Snapz Pro for static image capturing (and use Screenium for video capturing, ScreenFlow is great, but overkill for my needs). My biggest annoyance with Snapz is that there is no better way to invoke it (e.g. a menu bar icon). I do not use it often enough to put in into the Dock, and every time I need to use it, I can't, for the life of me, remember the keyboard shortcut, so I start digging through the Applications folder, looking for an icon that makes sense. I did buy Voilà, but after realizing it silently made itself the default application for several file types, I removed every trace of it, as I can't live with an unpredictable system.

Hey dreyfus,
There is a way to overcome the Voila bug (I would rather say it as a action than bug), while installing Voila, OS detects it as an Application to playback videos too, as Voila supports certain formats ("mov",@"mp4",@"m4v",@"avi",@"3gp"). Any other Application which supports different video formats will be detected by OS by default and selects the same. Reverting back should be done manually i.e drag & drop a video to the desktop and select the video and do a "command + i" - information window will open. Next, find 'Open with' option from the info window and choose QuickTime for the same. Also make sure that you choose the option "Change All" in order to use the selected application to open all documents like the same.
Hope this helps.

I too like Voila. It's easy to use, powerful and costs much less than Snapz Pro. Voila does it all. Captures live streaming, YouTubes and make annotations easily. Also the "one click" feature allows the user to send file to email, iphoto, publish to web or print. Very nice.

Apple gives you a free way to capture a video of screen actions such as windows opening and the mouse moving. It can record your voice speaking while you're recording the video of the screen. It can also record a video of you (using the iSight camera) while you're recording the screen capture, and put that video of you into a small rectangle in the screen capture video.

The software is built-into QuickTime Player. I think it's been there since Snow Leopard.

There are some YouTube videos that demo it - for example, the video at

I've tried it, and it works fine. (I'm running Snow Leopard on an old MacBook Pro.)

I find most of their stuff overpriced and under-featured. That said, I got Wiretap and Snapz in bundles or via Macheist and I like the apps, for the most part.

I switched to SnagIt as soon as it became available for the Mac. I know ScreenFlow is great for longer video captures, but I got in on the ground floor with Camtasia and I'm quite happy with it. I have used Techsmith products on the Windows side for years and am very happy with both their Windows and Mac products.

Count me among those who switched to SnagIt. As an added bonus, it's available from the Mac App Store (so is Voila but Snapz is not).

Quicktime video capture doesn't have sound and is worthless. One of my biggest gripes about Quicktime video capture along with the fact that sound is auto muted when you open it. Also there's no way to tell if it is recording sound because there are no meter readings that let you know this.

QuickTime Player can indeed record audio from an external source (microphone or something jacked into the sound input port). Add Soundflower to your Mac and configure it correctly and QuickTime can also record your Mac's audio. And yes, in each case it shows sound meters.

It's come and gone now but still worthy of note to those still running running 10.5-6 client and server. Podcast Capture on the client-side and Podcast Producer on the server side. Together, these apps enabled a very powerful screen capture workflow. Here's a pretty good 'how-to' article by Chris Brewer: http://krypted.com/m...ast-producer-2/
There was even a Podcast Library feature that served as a content repository.
Not sure why Apple dropped this so quickly. It's probably related to their exit from the server hardware market.

There may be some disappointments ahead as SnapzPro now obeys the MacOS X proscription against capturing 'protected' video. All you'll get is a checkerboard pattern. I brought this to Ambrosia's attention and their reply was that this is an Apple thing that they are powerless to change. I wonder, though, if this behavior would improve if they changed the vdig from QuickTime to FFMPEG.
