I've had pretty good results by taking a backed up identity into a fresh OS X user account then dragging folders to create mbox files then importing into the original account (you can create an Outlook folder and populate it with only one message, if you want). That's probably not any easier if your broad email strategy doesn't include some way of managing accretion, but it has the benefit of being able to retrieve many different kinds of lost items.
