Nice review Lex,

I was a former iPhone4 user and never felt the need to upgrade to the 4S or 5.

Once The Lumia 920 was announced, I knew it was the device for me.

Good Luck on the next series! and looking forward to reading this.

CheerS!

Anil

I'm probably on the fringe, but I find the iPhone 5 screen too big, so I find all this talk of Lumia and Samsung screens that are even bigger to be a non-starter.

With the iPhone 4, I could reach the whole screen while holding it in one hand. With the 5, I have to stretch uncomfortably to reach the top of the screen (and it's encased in a thin, acrylic case.) As a pocket device, I find the iPhone 5 to be borderline oversized.

The Lumia and Samsung stuff are just puny iPads to me. (I do have a full-sized iPad, so I don't need my phone to be a tablet.)

Great read, Lex. I'm a former iPhone owner who switched to a Galaxy S3. What do you think of the iPhone's screen now that you've spent some time with a considerably larger one?

Though there are some limitations to the People Hub for full Facebook integration, I find myself using this as my primary method of using Facebook and rarely ever use the Facebook app. I actually uninstalled the app until if and when I ever need it again.

Interesting.

I've said for a while now, if I couldn't have an iPhone, I'd most-likely have a Windows Phone. You couldn't give me an Android phone as my primary.

The ONLY Android envy I have is the Torque app that runs over Bluetooth. When will Apple open up to more Bluetooth profiles for iOS? I was hoping Bluetooth Sharing was it, but it appears not. The makers of Torque are probably waiting for the same thing.

How could any tech/car nut not envy such a useful OBD-II app that's CHEAP? Instead, iOS users have to shell out $50 for an app, and a lot more for a good WiFi ELM adapter.

My iPhone is a love/hate kinda thing. I truly LOVE my iPhone, but there are things Apple does that makes me almost hate it. Why can't UNLOCKED iPhones easily access APN carrier settings? Only for T-Mobile, since they aren't an official carrier, yet. Meanwhile, LOCKED Android phones give access to APN settings without doing any hacks or tricks.

Anyway... I'm rambling... Thanks, Macalope, for getting me going... :)

I know a couple of heavy Windows guys who recently switched from iPhone 4S to Lumina 920's. They were surprised by a few things - they are not a fan of the keyboard even after more than 2-3 weeks. One was surprised when he had to switch back to his iPhone for a week that even though the screen is smaller, it fits as much information, if not more compared with Windows 8 Phone OS on the 920's larger screen.
The main reason they switched was for better Office/Outlook(Exchange) integration - although even then there have been a couple of emails with word attachments that they couldn't open that did open on the iPhone.

Overall much like yourself they would like a hybrid of the 2. (and the Lumina 920 hardware overall is very good - like being able to use the touch screen with gloves on works pretty well)

Re: "Despite its perhaps lackluster adoption in the marketplace, the Windows Phone OS itself is certainly no joke, and the Lumia 920 is a great device."

Well that explains it. Just being "serious" isn't enough to crush the two incumbents (iPhone + iOS / Samsung + Android). Great article, Lex, but all you've done is damn WP with faint praise.

In the top photo for this article (hand holding a red phone) there is a row of 4 small tiles near the bottom, each a photo. What do each of those tiles do?

A great beginning to this series, Mr. Friedman. I am a happy iPhone user, but like you I am interested in what Microsoft is doing with their phone OS. Your article was informative and I am looking forward to your follow up.

I think that's what he will cover in next section. "Me' tile and "people hub".
I think, those are photos of his contacts, clicking on which takes you to all the recent (social) conversations for that person like: sms, call history, facebook, twitter mgs, skype(in future) and probably photos or other things.

Disclaimer: I don't own a WP phone, but that's just my guess based on what I have read about it so far.

They are contacts you can pin to your start screen for easy access to call and text and also to keep up with their social activity and such.
