Actually, it happens automatically if you add a photo of the person in contacts, not in Mail. Been that way since NeXTMail.

@leicaman is perfectly correct. If your Contacts card includes a photo of the recipient then this is added tot mail messages to/from this contact.

I am averse to building in links to Facebook et al all over my system because who can tell what security exposures this might entail. Much better to keep as much as possible under the Apple umbrella.

Many people don't seem to appreciate one fundamental difference between Apple and Google/Facebook etc. Apple is focused on delivering rich, easy-to-use functionality. Google/Facebook etc are focused on capturing user activity so they can push advertising at you and find other ways to monetize your activity. Nein danke!
