Chris, am I missing something here if I can just as well push the mute key on the keyboard - apart from assigning another key?

OK, I must have been asleep while reading, I was thinking of the speaker key on the keyboard :-)

You can also open the Utilities folder in the Application folder and go to Audio Midi Setup > Input > click on Built-in Microphone or Built-in Input and tick the Master mute box. I use this when I have my Blue Mic Yeti plugged in.
