Hi there. I'm having a lot of trouble with my f Keychain Access. Basically, it keeps requiring me to type in my f password for stuff I never wanted protected in the first place. AND I have read the help viewer and Apple site documents about it and followed the instructions, changing the access requirements, etc., but about every third time I reboot it seems to forget all the stuff I entered before and begin requiring me to reenter everything. AND ALSO once I suspected it of crashing my computer because that icon was in the dock after the crash (I could still see the screen) even though I hadn't opened it.
I've read the support documents about deleting a misbehaving keychain item and then making a new one, but I don't WANT to make a bloody new one. I just want it to go, go go go away. I really don't know why this "keychain access" has to keep showing up for applications that I never asked for it in the first place. I don't mistrust the other members of my household, and if I want to secure my whole login, I can do that in System Preferences. ??? Why is this thing not totally voluntary? I know it's (supposed to be) a convenience item, but it has NOT been for this annoyed woman.
But more importantly, is there a way to just delete the whole f thing and be done with it? Without having to replace the keychain items?
Or make the whole utility go away forever?
I appreciate any input muchly. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The whole purpose of keychain is to keep you from having to type your password all the time. If you're upset about those dialogs that appear for certain tasks requesting an administrator password, they are not part of keychain access, and there is no way around them. If you really don't want the keychain access programme, you could simply trash it, but a lot of programmes simply won't work without it. I'm really not convinced what your annoyed with is actually keychain, as in my experience, keychain should never request your password for anything- it just saves them.

Before you give up, if you haven't already done so, try the Apple Keychin Repair Utility. Also, try using the Disk Utility's First Aid tab to run Repair Disk Permissions.

If all else fails, Apple KBase 106973 will tell you how to trash the old Keychain altogether.

It could be that your security settings are off. I used to have a little Lock icon on the top right part of my screen (by the clock) which allowed me to lock the screen, the keychain, etc...
One time it got set to "lock keychain" so I had to type in my admin passoword every time I wanted to use the keychain. Can someone please explain how to get this device back on my screen? It could help solve the riddle /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Under the "view" menu in Keychain Access, select "show keychain in menubar".

Thanx a lot Typhoon.

Ramona...open your keychain in "applications" ---> "utilities" --->"keychain access"
and view then select the "view" menu and select "show menu in status bar"

Click on that lock icon and see if you have anything locked. Unlock them if you do and your problems (should) go away.

Thanks for the input, everyone!
I think my main problem / fubar is some sort of bad interaction between Microsoft Entourage Email and my Keychain, it's not so much a problem with most of my apps, but no, I can't switch to Mail right now (compatibility issues). No matter how many times I change that Keychain, it keeps reverting to making me type passwords over and over again. And no, I'm not confusing this with the "administrator" thing that you have to type in to install a lot of software, and I know I'm not confusing it only because the box that keeps popping up specifically says "Keychain wants access." It's causing a LACK of convenience because I already am signed in as my self (in the System) and have already typed my email passwords into Entourage. This extra layer of "convenience" is anything but. (Note to Typhoon14: Do you use Entourage? If so, how did you get it to stop requesting the password??)
And yes, I know I could just go and delete the Keychain application by just moving it to Trash, but I was afraid there would be repercussions (like Entourage would stop working altogether). I also don't see any options on Entourage to tell it to stop interacting with the Keychain, although if anyone has any ideas along that front I'd be more than happy to hear them.
I also did that View, Show Keychain thing, and I'm unlocked (well, according that that, anyway).
I'm off to use the Keychain Repair utility now (thanks car1son) and see what that does. I wish I could make it go away altogether, but I 'spose that's not in the cards.
Thanks again, Ramona

In the Keychains pane, select the keychain name ref. to Entourage, or whatever other App is constantly asking you for the password, and in the right hand tab below (Attributes?), select the 'make always available' or whatever it exactly says.
This should solve the problem.
It's always wise to run Repair Privs regularly, and Macjanitor (if you'vr dl'd it).
