I was trying to change my desktop pic and accidentally clicked on the wrong folder -- one with giant files. (I had the same pic saved to a much smaller size in a different location -- the one I meant to access.)
The picture will display fine, but I can't get back into the Desktop section of System Preferences to change it to a smaller folder. The number of large files in the folder seems to bog it down and eventually it freezes up.
Any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

Just an idea... If you are right about the folder size being the sticking point, make another folder and temporarily move the files.
I don't see an easy way to remove the folder from the desktop pictures choices once it's been added.

I tried that one. No luck.. Thanks, though.

Try dragging the desktop preference file OUT of your prefs folder. The file is called "com.apple.desktop.plist" and can be found here - Username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Once that's done, launch Desktop from System Preferences and you should be back to the default. (You'll have to re-choose your desired desktop picture folder.) You can trash the old pref file.

Execute the following command in the terminal.
defaults delete com.apple.Desktop Background
You will have to set whatever background settings you have again, as this set your background preferences to default.
Edit: Er, right... Philbert's way will work too. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sue, sorry to burst your bubble /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
if you stored them in the system-wide folder (this is the default location so that all users can use the same set of pics), look on the boot drive >> Library >> Desktop pictures >> move to trash
if stored in your "users" folder (put them here if you want to be the only one who can use the pics), look in Users >>your name >> Pictures >> move to trash
moving the pics/folders to the trash from these locations will remove them from the available choices in the Desktop Pref Pane

Always happy to be set straight, Dogg! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
It wasn't my best researched effort, rather rushed, in fact. I find another folder called Wallpapers in my shared Library, I think it's just <whatever folder name> you've added. It looks like the pictures have been copied over rather than linked to (but it's the kids who add this stuff, so I can't say what method was used).
