I just purchased the Linksys PPS1UW Print Server to connect to my network consisting of a Mac Performa running OS 9.1, my
wife's PB G3 laptop running OS 9.1 and my Tibook G4 laptop running OS 10.2.6. I can get the print server to print the test page.
I can "see" the print server from my browser in performing the web setup of the server, and the TiBook "sees" it from the
network utility. One item I noticed in the web setup page is that the IP Sub Mask and Gateway IP address that get entered on
the TCP/IP setup page get swapped on the printed test page and on the web setup status page. I contacted Linksys and was
told, and I quote, " it is normal under the web page that the subnet mask and the default gateway is reversed". That was
surprising to me, since that information was not stated in either their manual, their web site or their FAQs. I've tried swapping
them, but have seen no difference in performance. I still cannot select the print server from the print center. I had presumed
that I could add a printer in Print Center as an IP printer, add the IP address of the print server, and press on. Unfortunately,
the only choices for print drivers under the HP printer drop down window are all Postscript drivers. My printer (HP PSC 950xi) is
not listed. Nor is any other print driver that is not postscript. I did note that, from my Performa, I could see the Print Server
from the chooser when I accepted the Print Server Appletalk default of LaserWriter, but all I got from the printer was jibberish.
I was told by Linksys before I bought it that the PSC 950xi will work with the PPS1UW. That must obviously be from a windows
setup. I also contacted HP about driver support to find out why their TCP/IP setup for the 950xi did not "see" the print server.
They basically said that the PSC 950xi is not a networkable printer, but that I might be able to get just a portion of the printing
function working if I could confirm from Linksys that they support the printer. So it appears there are no available HP drivers that
work though this print server from Macintoish computers. I'm hoping someone out there is clever enough to find a workaround.
