This must be one of my biggest pet peeves with the Mac OS - I can't adjust the volume of a CD playing in iTunes independently of the overall system volume to the point that the CD is louder than everything. Yes, I can adjust the system alerts volume, and I have some marginal CD volume control in iTunes (that maxes out far below the overall system volume), but all other sounds explode out of my speakers every time I listen to a CD!
For example, I'm listening to "The Pianist" soundtrack via iTunes as I write this. The volume in iTunes is set to maximum, my alerts volume (in system preferences) is set to about 1/3 maximum, and overall system volume is set to just over half. This works fine until I open Entourage - the "Welcome sound" erupts out of my speakers at 2-3 times the volume of my CD! Then my clock chimes on the hour, shattering my eardrums. Then someone sends me an instant message via AIM which triggers a decibel-blasting chime.
Yes, I know I can turn off the sounds in all the specific programs I named, but there are countless other sounds made my countless other programs, and there is no way to lower the volume of those programs while keeping my CD playing at a higher volume.
Or is there? If anyone has a solution, please let me know! I like the sounds my Mac makes when performing various tasks, but when that means I have to lower the overall system volume to "2" and therefore can't hear the CD I'm playing, I'm ready to hop over to my PC which has separate controls for every sound source input.
Thanks for any information you can provide!

You need to amplify the music coming out of iTunes by using the equalizer. raise the Preamp setting a few dB.

Thanks a lot! That was a very helpful bit of information. It definitely allows me to bring up the volume of iTunes more, and it's a good work-around. But when I put the pre-amp at full, I tend to get some distortion and breakup at the louder sections, and the iTunes volume still can't be set significantly higher than the overall system volume.
A great feature in the next OS X would be to allow one to selectively mute different sound inputs, and cycle through the mutes by pressing shift-mute. I'd love to be able to mute the system and alerts white iTunes is on, and then unmute the system once I'm finished with iTunes.
I wonder where I could send this suggestion...

If it makes you feel any better, I totally agree with you. I noticed (and used) that Windows sound mixer back on the PC I had to use at work a few years ago, and assumed Apple would eventually give us that same convenience but it's still an area where Windows is better. Now Panther has a lot of Windows catch-up features in it, maybe we'll get it then.

Another way to increase the volume of your audio files is to:
_
Right-click on the song (or multiple songs at once) in iTunes.
Get Info.
Options.
Volume Adjustment slider all the way to the right.
