I'm looking for some people to play Civilization 3 with online. I have yet to try the online play but I bet it would be way fun. I'm new to Civ3 but played Civ2. I'm not a total noob but not close to being really good either.

I just bought the game last night (really!). Am weaning-off the FPS that I'm so bad at. How's the learning curve? I am starting at Rome and have already run out of $. Will get back to you in a few weeks after I learn it some more. Happy... /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well if you played Civ2 like me then most of it should seem familiar and the learning curve won't be bad. If you never played any Civ game, I'll assure you that this game isn't that hard at the beginning. You can learn most of it through the tutorial and trial and error. That is how I started. You probably won't win and will have trouble here and there (citizens mad because their ruler is a noob, lol) but you do grow for a while. The key is that even when you are not good at this game it can still be fun. It's not like most games where the others in it are after you constantly. You can make alliances easy and just have fun exploring, expanding and gathering resources. Just make sure to get at least one military unit to fortify each new town asap. Get spearmen asap.
After you get passed the nooby stage of being happy just to have 3 towns and an ally and move onto wanting to learn how to grow towns as fast as possible, then there is a quite a bit to learn. Even then you can have fun at your own expertise level. If you are a gamer who isn't happy unless you win every time then this game isn't for you, but if you enjoy a challenge and like to improve on that challenge over time then this game can be a ton of fun. Read all you can and pratice. That is what I am doing now. It might not make complete sense now, but over time your questions will be answered and you will begin to play smarter and smarter. I'm no pro myself so I am still learning. I won in Civ2 once and it was rad. Took me many hours but in the end the top 5 cities were all mine and I had a lot of fun. I went the route of building the spaceship. That is one way to win. Just remember this game doesn't have to be a game of power, where you crush all others so that you are the supreme military power controlling all. You can win other ways. Try out the full on assult path, attacking one civ every chance you get, then try something else. It's fun allying with civs and trading technologies. You can advance faster that way.
by the way I got 3 towns up then ran out of money. You have to dismiss some units (this helps stop starvation by fixing it's cause - overpopulation) and try stuff like realocating where your workers gather (in the city screen click on squares that have whatn you need like more food). At least that is all I know for now which isn't much.
Anyhow, I'd love to meet up with other Civ3 players online.

As I usually use my PC to play games, I just wondered if it makes a difference? I assume MAC & PC players can meet online, can they not?

I would imagine they can but I haven't figured out how to play online yet. I could have sworn they had multiplayer over TCP/IP yet I don't see an option for multiplay on the main game screen. Maybe it works through a game service like Game Ranger or something.

I thought multiplayer Civ3 was throught there Civ3 - Play the World release, and that it was PC only - no Mac online multiplayer ability at all. I seem to remember people being kind of peeved about it.

Well, I am an avid Civ III player who did Civ II to. You are unfortunately right, no multiplayer for Civ III. Last year they came out with Play the world expansion for PC which has multiplayer. It will not be for the mac, but no big deal because it was very buggy with slow play and many crashes, and DirectX.
Possible good news though, a new expansion is due out for the PC this month called Conquests which is said to have much more stuff (it has been said that PTW expansion was not worth the money), and include PTW in it with revised multi-player. This looks like more people will buy this as it is worth it so it is possible this will be ported if it sells well.
I get much information on news and tips for the game (your gonna need them) from a website called civfanatics.com and also apolyton.com . I think civfanatics is much better because their forums have a mac section (no im not kidding), and they have something called GOTM (game of the month) for both PC and Mac users. These are modded games that have added civs and units and premade maps. You submit your game before the end of the month and the next month they come out with a score list so you can compare. Practice first as these are hard games.

Ahh Man, why'd you go and do that. I've got a love / hate relationship with the whole civilization series. I love the game but hate myself for spending so many damned hours playing this game when I should be doing something more constructive with my life !!

This is why I suggested civfanatics.com. They have helped me get from regent level to emporer and soon deity with all the tips. Both the manual and the in game tutorial stink, they don't tell you how to do anything in specifics. For example, pressing apple+j is a goto for all the same units in a stack, and pressing F7 is a way to find whos building what wonders of the world. Plus they have complete short cut keys that cut major time off the game.
The game did a poor job of explaning many basic things, but once learned its a fun game. But yes, it can consume many hours, but this is why some people buy games.
